Stem Cell Legislation
May 2, 2007
Late last session, Representative Terese Berceau (D-Madison) introduced a bill that would make it the policy of the state to permit research involving the derivation and use of human stem cells.
The bill also required that research involving human stem cells be approved by an institutional review board and a national oversight committee if state funds or resources are used to support the research.
The bill, formally known as Assembly Bill 1130, and its legislative history are available on the Legislature’s website.
While there was limited time remaining in the legislative session Representative
Berceau’s bill was introduced and there was little activity concerning
this bill, we expect that it legislation concerning stem cell research will
resurface in later sessions. The WJC will continue to monitor it and similar
proposals.
