State Budget - Court Interpreters

The 2007-09 state budget provides over $500,000 to increase funding for state reimbursement to counties for court interpreter services. In addition, it modifies statutory language to require that a court, in all criminal and civil proceedings, provide an interpreter for a party or witness who has limited English proficiency, regardless of indigence.  Under previous law, interpreters were only provided to indigent persons in certain types of cases.

The Governor recommends increasing state reimbursement to counties for court interpreter services. Also, the proposal expands interpreter services by requiring that a court always provide an interpreter for anyone with limited English proficiency, regardless of indigence. Under current law, interpreters are only provided to indigent persons in certain types of cases.
